Companion

Overview 

This position provides non-medical assistance, observation, supervision and socialization to functionally impaired clients.  The therapeutic goal may be related to client safety and/or toward promoting client independence or toward promoting the mental or emotional health of the client.  Tasks are performed in accordance with Plan of Care and/or under the direct supervision of the Client, family member or authorized representative.  This position reports directly to the assigned Veritey Health Supervisor. 

Responsibilities 

  1. Supervises and observes the client’s Activities of Daily Living (ADLs), such as: 

    • Reminds client to bathe and to take care of personal grooming and hygiene, 

    • Reminds client to take medications, 

    • Observes and supervises snack, meal planning and preparation, and /or eating, 

    • Assists with toileting or maintaining continence. 

    • Reminds client to take medications; 

  2. Accompanying (NOT transporting) client to necessary medical appointments, grocery shopping, and obtaining prescription medications; 

  3. Supervises/assists client with laundry; 

  4. Performs housekeeping duties that are essential to the care of the client; 

  5. Assists the client with communication; AND 

  6. Reports observed changes in the client’s physical, mental or emotional condition to the supervisor. 

The Companion is NOT PERMITTED to perform any medical tasks, including, but not limited to, the following: 

  1. Administer shots, including insulin. 

  2. Pour any medication or place medication in the patient’s mouth. 

  3. Administer any enema. 

  4. Administer eye drops. 

  5. Change the dressing on a wound. 

  6. Cut the patient’s finger or toenails. 

Qualifications 

  1. Successful completion of ninth grade education /AND/ Nonprofessional supportive service experience; /OR/ High school diploma; AND 

  2. Demonstrate basic knowledge of home management skills; AND 

  3. Be in good physical health, including a negative tuberculosis test, within twelve (12) months prior to the first assignment, and annually during each subsequent year of employment; AND 

  4. Provide references that will be used in the hiring process; AND 

  5. Submit to the criminal and abuse registry check in that state; AND 

  6. Completion of the Veritey Health pre-service training program and achievement of an average score of 85% or greater on the Company exam; /or/ evidence of current certification and four (4) hours of pre-service training with Veritey Health; AND 

  7. Demonstrate a caring attitude toward all persons regardless of age or any physical or mental disability; AND 

  8. Demonstrate the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with Clients, co-workers, office staff and the general public; AND 

  9. Demonstrate the ability to effectively follow written and oral directions and instruction; AND 

  10. Demonstrate the ability to communicate effectively, which includes possessing the ability to read and write; AND 

  11. Demonstrate the ability to follow the Plan of Care with minimal supervision.
